And while her talent and onscreen magnetism have gained her 32 awards and a mess of nominations, the latest chapter in Henson’s career is taking her back to her first love. "I always loved and understood hair," she tells Allure. "Growing up, we took [it] very seriously. I was always in a salon every week getting a different hairstyle." "A lot of times, we as Black women have to wear a mask or swallow how we really feel, or take whatever is given to us. And it just drives me nuts. We live this stuff every day." Another product from the line I’ve been using religiously is the Guardian curl refresher ($10) with "city shield," which protects your hair from the ravages of pollution.

In a testament to how effective her products are, the hair chameleon herself gave Glamour a step-by-step of her wash-day routine. In between washes, I used the Hustle and Co. co-wash ($10), which, besides the scalp scrub, is my favorite product in this line. It gently cleanses and makes my hair feel incredibly soft after I wash it out. My hair was pretty tangled by the time I got around to using this stuff, and I noticed I didn’t need to glob on a ton of product in order to get the slip I needed to detangle my hair.

When she moved to Los Angeles, one of the first things she did was look for someone to give her perms. Henson is part of a growing number of Black women in Hollywood who have launched hair-care products in recent years. Others include Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross, Sienna Naturals by Issa Rae and Hannah Diop, Flawless by Gabrielle Union and 4U by Tia Mowry.

Even without a rich lather, my scalp — and my senses — were soothed with this refreshing solution. No wash day is complete without a deep conditioner, and I used TPH’s After Dark overnight mask ($15) after cleansing. The deep conditioner has a firm consistency, which felt promising. As for its actual use, again, it was made for all hair types, so it worked nicely, but I typically prefer something that provides even more conditioning. However, all this does is pose an opportunity for the brand to come up with a deep conditioner for tightly coiled hair types, which I would buy in a heartbeat. Henson said she went down an Instagram rabbit hole, observing how Black women styled their hair and what they considered to be healthy hair.
When nobody knew who I was, I had to take whatever [hairstylist] they gave me. I remember one time the stylist decided to put a root booster in my pressed hair. My roots looked like they were rising from the dead, honey. The rest of my head was bone-straight with a curl at the end, like a helmet head, and I had to do a whole photo shoot like that.
I understood hair, and I started doing my own at a really young age. I got my first Marcel curling iron and a hot stove when I was in ninth grade. I remember getting my hair done without my mother’s permission; up until then, she was doing my hair in the kitchen. But I went off one day and got it all chopped off. After all that's done, it's time to start washing my hair. Then I wash that out, and then we're ready for conditioning.

When you have a weave or an install, your hair is braided down and then sometimes they sew a [hair] net down on top of that and then they sew the hair tracks on top of that. If Taraji P. Henson weren’t acting, she’d probably be doing hair. As a college student, the Empire star would do wet sets (styling wet hair with rollers immediately after cleansing) for her classmates as a side hustle.

You probably already know about Rihanna’s beauty and skincare lines. However, there are other Black-owned beauty labels experiencing an increase in sales in this new civil rights era. The Oscar-nominated actor never thought she would launch a hair-care line. Watch the video above to see Henson's full hair routine.
It’s part of a boom in the beauty industry, which has often benefited from Black buying power but seen only a small number of Black business owners prosper. For the longer top sections of hair, Henson switches from a flat iron to a curling iron to create slightly larger curls. After the heat styling is done, Henson applies the new TPH hair oil to add shine and help break up the curls into loose body waves.
I use this in the morning to revive and fluff out my hair after a night's sleep. It’s lightweight and locks in the moisture I need without making my hair feel weighed down. I love it so much, I think I'm gonna need a jumbo size.
"Tym Wallace taught me that." Wallace is Henson's go-to hairstylist. Rihanna did her damn thing with this Fenty, honey. My favorite remover right now is Clinique Take the Day Off. I need this by the tub, especially with the stuff Ashunta [Sheriff, her makeup artist on Empire] puts on Cookie. I had glitter lips the other day; glitter lodged all in my throat. Now I'm dreaming up all the ways I can use this product to make my braided protective styles last a couple of weeks longer.
I’ve already transferred some of my full-size bottle into a travel-size container because I refuse to be caught on a trip without it. This one uses large granules of sugar to get the exfoliation done. When I use a scalp scrub, I part my hair and then apply a bit of product to each section to ensure I exfoliate my entire scalp.
My makeup artist tells me I can’t use those eye patches every day. I’m like, "What do you mean? It’s part of my routine!" I just love the way they make my eyes feel. It’s brick-hard — you have to put it in the microwave to soften it. I tried to use other stuff, and I’m like, "No." I don’t put my name on things I don’t actually use. I did a campaign [in 2013] for Jergens Shea Butter Moisturizer lotion, and I’m still using it to this day. If you go to the store and can’t find it, it’s because I’m in the area and I bought it out.
The citrusy honey smell emanates throughout the whole bathroom, and it lingers on my hair for the rest of the day. It cuts through product and oil buildup and hydrates at the same time, so I never have to worry about overdoing it and causing a dry scalp. The Smooth Attitude leave-in ($13) served as a beautiful base for my wash-and-gos.
